Mount Si JV Lose to
Bellevue
The Mount Si Junior Varsity team
started sluggishly, but finished the second half of
the game strong in their 33-6 loss to Bellevue. The
Wolverines capitalized on numerous special teams
miscues by the Wildcats in the first half including
fumbling the opening onside kick, a blocked punt for
a touchdown and a blocked extra point. Sophomore
Beau Shain showed great fight and hustle blocking
two PAT attempts.
The second half began with Mount Si trailing 27-0.
Zane Berhold connected with tight-end Grant Thomas
for the Wildcats lone touchdown. Zane and fellow
safety/wide receiver Maverick Schirmer each added an
interception to their season tallies as the Wildcat
defense stiffened. Bradley Christensen provided
strong protection on offense and added several
tackles for loss, a couple of sacks and a forced
fumble to his defensive stats.
The second half scoring finished a 6-6 tie as the
Wildcats showed greater intensity and offensive
continuity. This game demonstrated the potential
that exists in this very young group of Mount Si
Junior Varsity players.

JV WINS BIG OVER
REDMOND 41-6
The Mount Si JV Team
picked up its fourth victory of the season with a
41-6 victory over Redmond High School. It was a
balanced Wildcat attack, but it was the running game
that contributed on the scoreboard. Maverick
Schirmer had one “Pick 6” and a second one was
called back after an unnecessary block in the back
penalty. Zane Berhold rotated in a quarterback but
made an athletic play picking off a Mustang pass
(one of three Wildcat interceptions on the evening).
Jordan Chapman opened the scoring for the Cats
followed by a couple of Nick Mitchell scrambling
runs for a touchdowns to put the Wildcats up 20-6
early. Later, Bradley Christiansen would realize
every lineman’s dream: Scoring a touchdown by
pouncing on a fumble in the end zone to move the
score to 27-6. Bailey Takacs would add a 40 yard
winding run for another Wildcat touchdown to take
the score to 34-6. Schirmer’s “pick six” would make
it 41-6.
The Wildcat JV Team travels to Bellevue next Monday
10/24.

comeback by offense and a great job for the defense
to hold them to zero. By: Curt Carlson

JV DROPS ANOTHER
AT SKYLINE 34-10
GAME HIGHLIGHT PHOTOS AVAILABLE HERE
A young Mount Si JV team
lost to a junior heavy Skyline team 10-34. Bad field
position enabled the Spartans efficient spread
offense multiple short field drives. The Wildcats
managed to hold the Spartans out of the end zone on
their first possession and got a turnover on downs.
The Spartans quickly got the ball back after the
Cats were unable to muster any offense. An
ineffective run game and a Spartan defense sitting
back waiting to defend the pass on third and long
resulted in difficult running the ball and two
interceptions.
Trailing 0-20 at the half, the young Wildcats came
out in the 3rd quarter enthused and ready to work.
Mount Si’s defense began to defend the Spartan’s
spread offense and forced a punt. A high snap lead
to favorable field position for the Cats. Kicker
Chace Carlson knocked a solid 30+ yard FG through
that had another 15 yards of distance to it that put
the Wildcats on the board 3-20. Later in the second
half, Jake Smith added another interception to his
season tally. The pass was picked out of the Cat’s
end zone and returned to mid-field, displaying
Jake’s speed and playmaking ability.
The Wildcat defense faced off against a run oriented
quarterback in the second half, but after a few big
runs, they managed to keep him corralled. The
offense would manage one last scoring drive that was
capped with a QB bootleg and diving run into the end
zone. The second half totals of 10 points versus
Skyline’s 14 showed a more competitive team, that
showed some growth. The running game was more
functional in the second half, giving the Cats
greater balance on offense. Credit goes to the young
offensive line for working through half-time to make
adjustments that allowed them to open up holes for
running back’s Chapman, Cotto, and Takacs.
The Junior Varsity team welcomes Mercer Island to
Mount Si Stadium next Monday Oct 10th.

JV IMPROVES RECORD TO 2-1 DEFEATING LAKE WASHINGTON
25-21
The Junior Varsity team
pulled out a win 21-25 over Lake Washington on
Monday in Kirkland. The game started out as a
defensive battle with neither offense able to get in
rhythm, but Mount Si definitely showing more
promise. There were several misses on touchdown
opportunities to open receivers by mere inches and
twice the Wildcats had to settle for Chace Carlson
field goals to lead the game 0-6. With just about a
minute left in the half, Lake Washington faced a 4th
and 2 from its own 48 yard line. The Kangs running
back appeared to simply pick-up the first down, as
he was surrounded by a mob of Wildcat tacklers. But
the ball carrier would emerge from the scrum into
the wide open and take it to the house for a
touchdown. The resulting kick was good for a 7-6
lead for the Kangs. Lightning would strike again
twice for the Kangs first with a short pooch kick
that was fumbled by the Wildcats and recovered by
the Kangs with just over 30 seconds left in the
half. On the first play from scrimmage, the Lake
Washington quarterback heaved a jump ball that his
receiver managed to come down with, then kept his
feet after taking a shot from the Wildcat’s safety
and simply walked into the end zone. The PAT was
good and the Kangs had turned a bad first half into
a 14-6 lead.
The Wildcats regained their composure and struck pay
dirt midway in the third quarter on a 20 yard pass
to Trevor Daniels. The 2 point conversion was no
good to make the score 14-12. Mount Si’s defense
continued to hold down the Kangs and it appeared
that the Cats were going to break open the game with
two punt returns for touchdowns, but both were
called back on penalties. The Wildcats were able to
overcome these mistakes and to capitalize on Lake
Washington turnovers to take a 14-25 lead on
touchdown passes to Trevor Daniels and Grant Thomas.
With 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Lake
Washington again managed to sneak their star player
in behind the Wildcats secondary for a long
touchdown pass to make it 21-25. The Kangs needed to
recover the onside kick to have a chance to win the
game and almost did so, but the Wildcats manage to
recover and run out the clock to collect the win.

DEFEATS BOTHELL in Game Two - 7 to 6
Game Report: Jeff
Mitchell
The Mount Si JV followed
the example of the Varsity team defeating Bothell
7-6 at Mount Si Stadium. A fumbled punt return in
the first quarter after an excellent Chace Carlson
punt set up the Wildcats lone touchdown. A 5 yard
slant to Maverick Schirmer was followed by the
winning PAT. Chace Carlson’s kicking was the
difference in the game, but they were just part of
his contribution to the Wildcats’ special teams
effort. Chace added a solid tackle during a kick
return that stopped a possible touchdown. Jake Smith
intercepted two passes and nearly had 3 others while
combating the Cougars passing attacking. Leading the
charge on offense was the Cotto Brother tandem of
fullback Drew and tailback Joey. Joey epitomized
“Mount Si Football” with his hard running style
against a substantially larger Cougar defense. The
Wildcats’ offensive and defensive lines set the tone
for the low scoring affair displaying a toughness
that the Cougars weren’t able to match. A big third
down conversion on a Joey Cotto run with third and
fourth effort helped to ice the game with just over
a minute left.
The entire Mount Si Varsity squad prepares for the
arrival of the Lake Washington Kangs this Friday at
Mount Si Stadium.
