Bellevue overwhelms Mount Si in 3A

Mount Si
coach Charlie Kinnune knew his team had
to stop Bellevue’s big plays if the
Wildcats were going to have a chance to
make it to past the first round of the
Class 3A playoffs. But from beginning to
end, the top-ranked Wolverines
controlled the game at Bellevue Memorial
Stadium. Senior running back Sean Coley
scored on a 64-yard run on the game’s
opening play. Junior quarterback Ian
Ilgenfritz played in place of starter
Chris Clark, who was academically
ineligible.
Bellevue
combined a fast, deceptive offense with
a swarming defense to overwhelm Mount Si
49-17 on the cold, crisp night. “We made
some big plays,” Bellevue coach Butch
Goncharoff said. “A lot of guys touched
the ball and a lot of guys had success.”
Bellevue won the two team’s first
meeting in September, 28-14, thanks in
part to a 78-yard touchdown pass and a
34-yard touchdown run. It was more of
the same for the Wolverines this time
around. During the first half, they
moved the ball efficiently and
relentlessly on their way to 28 points
in the first quarter and another 14 in
the second. Mount Si could only manage a
field goal in response. On Bellevue’s
second possession, senior quarterback
Joe Joe Conner ran 50 yards on a screen
pass to set up junior running back Joey
Mangialardi’s one-yard touchdown run.
Coley then intercepted a bubble pass
from Wildcat quarterback Ian Ilgenfritz,
and returned it for a 42-yard touchdown
run. Mangialardi notched his second
scoring run to push the score to 28-0 in
the first quarter. Mount Si had run
seven plays. “We couldn’t stop their big
play,” Kinnune said. “We struggled
defending them. Most people will.”
Ilgenfritz
still managed to throw for 202 yards.
The
Wolverines lived up to their reputation
for being disciplined and focused
throughout the night, picking off three
interceptions and recovering a fumble.
Mangialardi added his third touchdown in
the second quarter on a 45-yard run. He
finished with 80 yards on eight carries,
all in the first half. “That was the
best first half we’ve had all year,” he
said. It was the ninth time this season
that the Wolverines’ defense limited an
opponent to 17 or fewer points. Their
only two losses this season were to
out-of-state opponents, Katy (Texas) and
Grant (Sacramento, Calif.). “I can’t
believe that there is anyone in this
league that can beat them right now,”
Kinnune said. “I’ve been around a long
time, and that’s a pretty good team.”
Bellevue
(9-2) will play at Glacier Peak 7 p.m.
Nov. 21.

Wildcat football

The Mount Si Wildcats
football team worked very hard this season to make the state
playoffs. Their dreams of winning a state title were dashed
last Friday night, but before they said so long to this 2009
campaign, they sent a senior out with a spot in the history
books.
Mount Si wide receiver Rossco Castagno with a pass reception
of about 15 yards late in the fourth quarter broke a couple
of school receiving records, but by then it was all over as
the Bellevue Wolverines scored early and often in a 49-17
rout which ended the Wildcats' season at 6-5.

BELLEVUE — Mount Si coach
Charlie Kinnune spoke this week of the importance of
limiting Bellevue's big plays. The Wolverines wasted little
time spoiling that game plan. Bellevue's Sean Coley scored
on a 64-yard run on the opening play from scrimmage and the
top-ranked Wolverines cruised to a 49-17 win in the first
round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday night at Bellevue
Memorial Stadium. Bellevue (9-2) will play at the winner of
today's game between Glacier Peak and Timberline next Friday
or Saturday.
"We made some big plays," Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff
said. "A lot of guys touched the ball and a lot of guys had

the KingCo teams in September, thanks in part to a 78-yard
touchdown pass and a 34-yard TD run. It was more of the same
for Bellevue Friday night. Joe Joe Conner ran 50 yards with
a screen pass to set up Joey Mangialardi's 1-yard touchdown
run on the Wolverines' second possession.
Bellevue then got a 42-yard interception return for a
touchdown by Coley, and Mangialardi added his second scoring
run. Mount Si (6-5) ran all of seven plays on offense before
Bellevue took a 28-0 lead.
"We couldn't stop their big play," Kinnune said. "We
struggled defending them. Most people will."

The Round of 16
is here, and it brings a familiar foe.
By: Rhett
Workman - Sno-Valley Sports - Friday November 13, 2009
The Wildcats head into
this game on a bit of a high, having beat Hazen 27-0 last
Saturday night under tough conditions, both in the weather
department and on the sidelines - the Wildcats had to
withstand the academic-caused benching of QB Chris Clark,
which they did very nicely. Clark is back under center
tonight, and if his limited action last Saturday is any
indication, he could be in for a good game tonight.
But Bellevue is also back to its old self again, as they are
getting some of their top players back in time for tonight's
game. As you will remember, the Wolverines were a pretty
beat up group when they came to Mount Si back at the end of
September, and as a result had to find other ways to win,
which they did against the Wildcats. Those other ways
included long passing TD's, among other things. Big plays
will be something Mount Si needs to avoid giving up on
defense tonight if they have a chance. Watch for the Van
Ackeren brothers, Kendrick and Brayden, to be the big
players for the Wolverines tonight.
Both of these teams know each other, so there will be no
surprises tonight.
So with all that said, we are taking Bellevue, like everyone
else is, but with this caveat: These boys from the Valley
will go out on that field tonight and give their 110% best
efforts. They have worked very hard and survived some
adversity to get to this point, and have worked too hard in
our view to come out flat tonight. This group has shown a
lot of resiliency and character, and realize that while the
challenge is a bit steep, if they work very hard and get a
couple breaks going their way, they will succeed. Remember
two things: one, last year when they played at Bellevue,
Mount Si was literally two critical fumbles from actually
winning that game, and two, it is, after all, Friday the
13th (we thank Jordan Karavias' sister Rachel for reminding
us of this yesterday). So while others have this as a
blowout, we think this could be close. And hey, all it takes
is hard work, and a couple big breaks, and the score
prediction you see below could be much, much different.

3A State Playoff
Predictions and Analysis
by metro12 on Thu Nov

Bellevue Wolverines
(8-2) vs. Mount Si
Wildcats (6-4)
The Bellevue Wolverines are
finally healthy and that can only mean trouble for the rest
of the state. On Friday night the Wolverines will take on
one of the hottest teams in the state in Mount Si who has
played a brutal schedule so far. These two teams have
already played once this year and Mount Si knows what they
need to do to keep this one close and slow down the vaunted
Wolverine Wing-T. The Wildcats will look to establish the
run early with RB Matt Bankston who has had a very
impressive Junior campaign with 600+ yards and 6 rushing
TD’s. Running on the Wolverines is never an easy task and if
Bankston doesn’t get going early on, it will make it tougher
for the passing game to open up. The Wildcats have been
impressive through the air all season. Senior QB Chris Clark
has a very accurate arm and reads opposing defenses
extremely well. Cark has thrown for 1,400+ yards and 14 TD’s
on the year in a very disciplined offensive system. Clark
has established a great connection with Senior WR Rossco
Castagno. Castagno is very quick in the open field and loves
to make defenders miss after catching short slants and
bubble screens from Clark. Castagno is currently the KingCo
leader in receptions, and also has 11 TD’s. Mount Si is
going to need to win the turnover battle and avoid the big
play by the Wolverines in order to have a shot at pulling
off the upset. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, when the
playoffs start, Bellevue turns it up a notch and has proven
to be nearly unbeatable in the state tournament. This year,
the Wolverines have a very athletic secondary that matches
up well with the Wildcat passing attack. Bellevue will also
have their star RB David Nguyen back after missing most of
the season with a leg injury. The Wolverines are very deep
at running back, and in addition to Nguyen also have JoJo
Connor, Freddie Levine and Joey Mangialardi who would all
start at most schools. The Wing T that Bellevue runs is
extremely difficult to defend against and Mount Si will need
to stay in their lanes and focus on which carrier has the
ball. The Wolverine O-Line is very strong and quick and is
led by the KingCo 3A Lineman of the Year Julious Moore. I
look for Bellevue to methodically move the ball all night on
the Mount Si defense and come up with a few big plays to
bust this one open early. Bellevue’s defense has been lights
out as of late and I would be surprised if Clark can
consistently throw on the athletic backers and defensive
backs As good as Mount Si has been this year and as well as
they are playing, right now, they will find out what playing
Bellevue in the state playoffs is all about. Mount Si has
had a great season and even in defeat should be proud of
making it this far.

Mount Si has been here
before.
For the second time this season, the Wildcats are playing
Bellevue. This time, however, they have to play on the road
at 7 p.m. Friday.
"We're definitely in familiar territory," coach Charlie
Kinnune said. "Whether that helps us or not, I'm not sure.
We played Bellevue when they were minus a number of players,
as we were, and they were still very good. "They're playing
very good football right now. Their defense is tougher than
nails and so we're just going to practice really hard and
concentrate on getting better this week."

The Wildcats make the
short jaunt down to Renton to meet a former Seamount League
rival in the Highlanders. Mount Si comes in off a tough loss
to a very good Liberty team, 38-28. Hazen took care of Tyee
in their last game.
Back at midweek, we linked you to some stats on Hazen from
the Seattle Times, and we will mention the key numbers here
again:
-Top threat is on the ground: RB James Holland has over 900
yards on the season
-Hazen is 0-2 against KingCo opponents, being outscored
113-25.
The two opponents Hazen lost to were Liberty and Interlake,
both teams who are also in the playoffs this week in 3A and
2A respectively. The Patriots and the Saints as you all know
are offensive firepower's, while Mount Si is a grinding,
physical team that itself is capable of some offensive
success. See Juanita. Conditioning will be a big factor
here, and this should easily favor the Wildcats.
If Mount Si can shut down Holland, this will be huge, so
look for the linemen, led by Ahmad Korma, Jordan Karavias,
and Aaron Moetului to try to get that done.
For the Wildcats to feel comfortable, their offense will
need to score quickly and often. Watch for QB Chris Clark,
RB Matt Bankston and WR's Jordin Kinnune and Rossco Castagno
to lead the way there. They all chipped in on offense in
last week's loss.
The guy who posts predictions on the Seattle Times boards
has this as a 42-7 Mount Si blowout. While we want to give
Hazen a little more respect than that (especially since
their league rival Lindbergh rolled over Bainbridge last
night), the numbers which we mentioned at the beginning of
this post, specifically the KingCo record, don't lie. This
one will be over sooner rather than later.
MOUNT SI 35, HAZEN 13
Week 10
KingCo 3A Predictions and Analysis
by
metro12 on Wed Nov 04, 2009 7:10 pm
Mount Si Wildcats (5-4) vs.
Hazen Highlanders (7-3)
The ‘Cats from Snoqualmie head into this match up on a roll.
Despite their loss last week to Liberty, Mount Si has been
one of the best teams in the state during the second half of
the season. Part of the reason for that is their dynamic
passing attack led by Senior QB Chris Clark. Clark has
thrown for 1,300 yards and 13 TD’s. His favorite target is
Rossco Castagno who leads the KingCo Conference in
receptions but also has over 700 yards and 11 TD’s on the
year. Clark likes to throw the bubble screen to Castagno who
uses his speed to eat up yardage. Mount Si is playing better
defensively as of late, but still ranks dead last in passing
defense on the year. Luckily for the Wildcats they are
playing a team from the Seamount league. Hazen has already
played two KingCo teams in non league play, losing both
games by the score of 113-25. If Hazen wants to make this
one closer they will need to make adjustments on the
defensive side of the ball. Offensively, Hazen lives and
dies by their All-Conference running back and team captain
James Holland. Holland is a very big running back at 6’3 190
and is very tough to take down. It usually takes 2 or 3
tacklers to wrap him up and bring him to the turf. Holland
has rushed for13 TD’s on the season and always shows up to
play. I look for Mount Si to stack the box and bring up the
Safety’s in order to stop Holland. Hazen’s Junior QB Travis
Johnson does have a good arm and has been decent this year,
but Mount Si will bring the blitz to not allow Johnson time
to throw. The bottom line in this one is Mount Si has been
tested all year and has won big games. Hazen plays in a very
weak conference that has a combined 1 non league victory.
Mount Si will continue their offensive hot streak and march
into the State playoffs with an easy W.
Prediction: Mount Si

Wildcats to square off against Hazen Highlanders
November 4, 2009
By Tim Pfarr - SnoValleyStar.com
The Mount Si
Wildcats have made their way to the postseason,
and they will be facing off against the Hazen
Highlanders Nov. 7 at Renton Memorial Stadium.
Hazen finished second in the Seamount league
with a 7-3 record. Mount Si will need to keep an
eye on senior running back James Holland, as
Holland ran for 918 yards and 11 touchdowns
during the regular season. (read

Tough schedule pays dividends for Mount Si
Posted by Mason Kelley

Mount
Si's first four opponents were ranked in one
state poll or another this season. It's no
surprise the Wildcats, who were replacing 19 of
22 starters, started 1-3. But after winning four
in a row — including a 42-6 victory last week
over Juanita, which has also been ranked this
year — Mount Si is heading back to the playoffs
after one last regular-season game against
Liberty Friday night.
"We're used to playing good teams," Mount Si
coach Charlie Kinnune said. "We don't get too
many patsies on our schedule, hardly ever. Our
kids are used to it. We don't get intimidated by
anybody. We're going to come out and hit you."

After replacing 19 of 22 starters
coming into the season, Mount Si coach Charlie
Kinnune knew it would take time for his team to come
together. But he expected the Wildcats to get there
at some point. Following a 42-6 upset win over
Juanita -- their fourth straight victory -- that
vaulted them into the playoffs, Mount Si is exactly
where Kinnune hoped his team would be. "We've come
along pretty quickly and pretty nicely," Kinnune
said.
The Wildcats (5-3, 3-2 KingCo 3A/2A) have developed
an impressive passing game led by senior quarterback
Chris Clark, who is finding senior receivers Rossco
Castagno and Jordin Kinnune. Mount Si is also
running the ball well and trying to find a balance
between the ground game and passing attack as it
prepares for the playoffs, starting with its final
regular season game at No. 3 Liberty on Friday.
Kinnune praised the play of senior defensive
end/offensive tackle Aaron Moetului and Castagno,
saying they are key pieces to the Wildcats' success
so far this season.
Since Mount Si's victory over Juanita locked up the
third and final playoff spot out of KingCo 3A/2A, I
wanted to catch up with coach Kinnune, and I'll have
more on the team in our notebook later this week.

The Wildcats (5-3, 3-2) gained
413 yards of total offense to
Juanita's 198 and forced two
second-half fumbles. Mount Si
led 14-6 at the break and scored
all four times it had the ball

the third period that covered 18
plays and took nearly nine
minutes.
"It was 14-6 for a long time and

Preview and
prediction for tonight's Mount Si-Juanita
football game
Friday, October 23, 2009 -
Rhett Workman - SnoValleySports.BlogSpot.com
Well, well.
We have a playoff game tonight. Winner gets in.
So let's get to previewing and picking.
The Wildcats travel to Juanita with a lot on the
line. Win, and they're in; lose and they could
be in serious playoff trouble.
But for the Rebels, the stakes are even bigger.
Juanita, if you read Mason Kelley's blog piece
on the game on the Seattle Times blog, hasn't
been to the playoffs since 1994, so tonight's
game is the biggest game since then, 15 years. A
theme, then, for tonight: pressure.
Mount Si has its own pressure, yes, but if
you're the Rebels, the pressure's even bigger. A
lot of people will be watching very closely how
they perform, since this is what their coach,
Shaun Tarantola, has worked three years to get
for this program: a game that matters late in
the season. This in a sense is their final exam.
How Juanita responds to this will be key to
their success.
Juanita faces another tough test in Mount Si

Mount Si's varsity football
squad delivered a harsh
welcome to Sammamish at
homecoming, seizing a
masterful win at Friday
night's game.
First Quarter
Following a national anthem
sung by the Mount Si High
School Choir, the 'Cats won
the kickoff, then got on the
board in short order.
With 8:42 on the clock,
Chris Clark threw a 16-yard
touchdown pass to Rossco
Castagno. Cameron Van Winkle
made the kick after, putting
the score at 7-0.
On their first possession,
Sammamish went three and
out, and Castagno returned
the punt. Clark passed to
Kinnune just out of the end
zone with 5:13 left on the
clock.
At 4:24, Donny Hendrickson
ran 25 yards for a
touchdown. Van Winkle kicked
the extra point, making it
14-0.
With 1:56 left in the first,
Matt Bankston ran 57 yards
for a touchdown, set up by a
20-yard pass reception by
Castagno from Clark. Van
Winkle got the point after
touch down, putting the
score at 21-0.
Second quarter
Five minutes into the second
quarter, 'Cat defensive
lineman Dylan Woll recovered
a fumble by Sammamish's
quarterback. Ian Ilgenfritz,
in quarterback for Clark,
ran a 17-yard keeper on
fourth down, setting up
another keeper, a one-yard
touchdown run with 8:12
left. The kick was good,
making it 28-0 in Mount Si's
favor.
With 6:55 left on the clock,
Woll recovered another
fumble by the Sammamish
quarterback. Running back
Chaz Blair ran eight yards
for the touchdown.
Next, Matt Bankston ran a
half yard for a touchdown
with under a minute left in
the second half. That play
was set up by a 41-yard pass
from Clark to Castagno.
Third quarter
Eight minutes into the third
quarter, Donny Hendrickson
scored a touchdown to put
Mount Si up 48-0, spurring a
running clock situation in
the game. A running clock
occurs when one team leads
by at least 45 points,
considerably speeding up
game time.
With 2:19 left in the third,
Sammamish got on the clock a
touchdown by Andrew Engles
from five yards out. Mount
Si remained in the lead,
48-7, holding the ball at
the mid-field as the quarter
ended.
Fourth quarter
With 8:11 left in the
fourth, Sammamish's Engles
scored a touchdown on a
24-yard run.
Four minutes later,
Ilgenfritz launched a
56-yard pass to a wide open
receiver named Cody Lane,
who beat feet past several
Sammamish defenders to make
the end zone. Final score
was 54 Mount Si, 13
Sammamish.

Preview and prediction for
tonight's Mount Si football game
against Sammamish
By

10.15.09
Homecoming 2009 is here, and
we want to welcome all of
you alums who have come in
from out of town to attend
tonight's festivities and
see your school once again.
It's going to be a rainy
night for sure, but
homecoming is always a
special time every fall, as
the local community gathers
to celebrate the
contributions of Mount Si
students past and present,
and also enjoy a little
football as well. So with
that let's get to the
preview and prediction.
MOUNT SI VS. SAMMAMISH
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17. 2009 -
7:00 PM
MOUNT SI HIGH SCHOOL
The Wildcats come in off a
hard-fought 21-13 win last
Friday on Mercer Island, a
win secured by tough defense
in the second half. Those
who were there know the
three plays that proved to
be huge on defense in that
second half.
1-Jordan Karavias'
interception of MI QB Jeff
Lindquist in the second
half. The ball was
gift-wrapped for one Mr.
Karavias, the interception
was so easy it was
ridiculous, in a good sense
of course.
2-Lars Swenson's PAT block
of MI on their lone
second-half touchdown.
3-The sack by Kasey Channita
of Lindquist in the fourth
quarter with MI driving for
the tie.
So, what needs to happen
tonight? Simple. You build
off that success and take it
up a notch. Mount Si fans
need to see more of this
tough defense. They also
need to see more of TE Joe
Farmer catching TDs with the
closest defender being
"miles" away; more of RB's
Chaz Blair, Matt Bankston
and Donny Hendrickson
running the ball with
precision; more of QB's
Chris Clark and Ian
Ilgenfritz doing their thing
under center, the list goes
on and on. With Sammamish
this is expected to happen
since the Totems are right
now in last place in league,
and last week got blown out
by Bellevue. The Wildcats
last year routed Sammamish
on their home field.
For Sammamish to have a
chance tonight, they will
need to hold on to the ball
well, as it will be quite
slippery. They also will
need some seniors to
contribute; those include QB
Nicholas Hartigan, RB Brett
Berky, WR/DB Anthony Do, and
RB Cole Barga. Mount Si's
ball handling will need to
be sharp too, as they also
will face the same slippery
conditions.
Another thing to watch for
is use of younger reserve
players. If the score gets
to a point where the outcome
is pretty much assured, look
for Wildcat coach Charlie
Kinnune to give as many of
those younger kids a chance
to play, since after all,
tonight is a special night
not just for the program,
but for the entire
community, and a lot of
folks who usually don't make
it out to games come out for
this game, so it'll be a
great opportunity for the
Valley to see all of their
boys doing their best
tonight.

Mount Si’s football team
played their brand of
football last Friday night,
Oct. 9 --- tough and
physical. The Wildcats
needed every last drop of
energy from everyone on the
field in order to dampen
Mercer Island’s homecoming
party, and they got it,
finding their way to a 3-3
record as a result. “Our
offense won the first half
and our defense won the
second half for sure,” said
Wildcat coach Charlie
Kinnune, as Mount Si
survived a last-ditch
Islander comeback attempt
for a 21-13 win. Joe Farmer,
Chaz Blair, and Donny
Hendrickson all scored
first-half touchdowns to aid
the Wildcats. Then it was
the defense’s turn to make
things happen.

MOUNT SI
WILDCATS VS. MERCER ISLAND ISLANDERS
By: Rhett Workman - snovalleysports.blogspot.com
The Wildcats go into
this one coming off that 62-7 shellacking of
Evergreen, and face an Islanders team which they
beat last season at Mount Si. One suspects that
Mount Si will do the same again tonight since MI has
been struggling, but let's have a look at their past
two games, both losses.
On the road last week, they were blown out by
Bellevue 48-6, while the week before, they almost
pulled the shocker over Interlake at home, scoring
45 points on the Saints defense. Interlake BTW won
that game 51-45, a shootout for sure. This is the
key thing to pay attention to tonight, is that MI is
home, and as they already have proven, they can be
very dangerous on their home soil. Leading that
charge will be sophomore QB Jeff Lindquist and
senior WR Erik Swedstedt and junior WR Ben Emanuels.
Senior RB Kurtis Rosengreen and junior RB Doug
Mahony will also be players to watch for an Islander
team who has a new coach this year in former
assistant Brett Ogata.
To get 45 points offensively, big plays are likely
part of that, so once again, Mount Si's defense will
have to stop the big play in order to be successful.
This has been an issue with them throughout the
season, so any improvement in that area will be
welcomed.
The Wildcats will have Chris Clark likely starting
at QB tonight, and joining him will be RB's Matt
Bankston and Shelby Williams, and WR Rossco
Castagno. Look for Williams to get plenty of
opportunity tonight to do some things as he adjusts
to the sport; he is new to it this fall.
RB Donny Hendrickson and the linemen, led by Aaron
Moetului, will also be key to success as well.
Another thing to think about: mental preparation.
This is a road game in advance of Homecoming, which
is next week, and it can certainly be assumed that
guys are starting to get excited about all the
activities that next week will bring, both on and
off the field. But they have a game to focus on
tonight, so playing for the present will also be an
important part of this. They can't get caught
looking ahead.
Mount Si is favored to win tonight, and it does look
quite winnable, but this is dangerous territory, and
a possible trap game. Think about this as well: two
years ago, the last time Mount Si made the trip to
the island, the Wildcats had to rally from 20-0 down
to stun MI 34-20. Something like that could happen
tonight, but likely not, and if it does, it will
have the same ending, in favor of the boys from the
Valley.

This was supposed to be the
week the high-school
football picture became a
bit clearer. All of the
high-profile games against
nationally ranked opponents
had faded away. It was Week
4 and, as the season draws
closer to the midway point,
this was the time where top
teams were expected to hit
full stride, making long and
lengthy runs toward the
postseason.
Bellevue was supposed to
rout Mount Si.
The Wolverines had the
potential to put up 28
points in the first quarter,
but they are still
struggling with turnovers
and penalties. Considering
all of the shuffling they
have done recently due to
injuries these mental
mistakes are easily
explained away, but Mount Si
is dealing with same issues
and the Wildcats put up a
fight.
Mount Si coach Charlie
Kinnune said he had six
players on crutches Friday
night and, coming off a
50-28 loss to Interlake the
week before, it would have
been easy to expect an early
blowout, but the Wildcats
kept the game just close
enough to keep things
interesting.

No. 2 Bellevue gets past
Mount Si, 28-14
By Mason
Kelley - Seattle Times staff

SNOQUALMIE — After two
straight losses against
nationally ranked
competition, Bellevue took a
step back to figure out what
was wrong. Sure, the
injuries were mounting, but
something else didn't feel
right. So on Friday night,
the Wolverines decided to
try and make the game fun
again. They weren't perfect,
but their 28-14 victory over
Mount Si was a step in the
right direction. "The
problem with the first
couple of games is we
weren't having enough fun,"
quarterback Kendrick Van
Ackeren said. "This game we
were having a lot of fun."
The Wolverines (2-2, 1-0
KingCo 3A/2A) also received
a lot of help from junior
Joey Mangialardi. He scored
the first touchdown on a
2-yard run. He picked off a
pass on the first play of
the third quarter. He seemed
to be in on just about every
tackle.

The Wildcats and

of, for different reasons,
embarrassing defeats in Week 3:
-Bellevue's vaunted "Wing-T"
offense was held scoreless
against California team Grant
last Saturday in a 14-0 loss,
the first loss they have had
against a California team since
they started playing schools

and prediction for tonight's Mount Si @ Interlake football
game
Rhett
Workman - SnoValleySports.com - 09.17.09
The Wildcats roll into Interlake for their first league road
test of the season, and it will not be an easy one for sure.
Mount Si's defense will be facing one of the league's best
QB's in Matt Malos, and folks, if you have seen the scores
of their first two games, you'll see what we mean. Interlake
scored 57 points in their first game against Hazen, then
scored 44 points last week against Yelm. So this is an
offense with a quarterback that is able to score a lot of
points, and many of those are likely by way of big plays,
something which Mount Si's defense has had trouble
containing the last two games. Seniors Ricky Aaron and
Willie Beattie lead the Saints receiving corps, and on the
ground, look for RB Brett Kirschner to lead the way.

Mount Si pulls off upset
Posted by Mason Kelley - Seattle Times
High School Sports Blog
09.14.09
Mount Si coach Charlie Kinnune spent most of
last week hammering home the same point: It takes four full
quarters to string together a win. It sounds like an obvious
concept, but it is something young teams can never hear
enough. During halftime of the Wildcats’ 24-21 upset win
over Issaquah, Kinnune told his players to celebrate the
game’s first two quarters. Then he asked the kids for two
more.
They delivered.
“I’m extremely proud of the kids and the coaches,” Kinnune
said. “A lot of times in situations like this, especially
when you live in a small community and the high-school
programs are what people talk about, you’re either the goat
or you’re the hero. It was a tough week around here last
week. The adults, at times, have it tougher than the kids.
Our coaches did a great job of staying focused and dealing
with what’s important.”
In his first career start, senior quarterback Chris Clark
completed 15 of 17 passes for 226 yards and three
touchdowns. "In my 18 years, I don’t know if we’ve ever been
that efficient,” Kinnune said. “That was really nice for him
to come out and do really well.”
Mount Si stuns Issaquah 24-21
September 15, 2009
By Dan Catchpole - IssaquahPress.com
After a tough loss to Bothell, the Issaquah Eagles suffered
another difficult loss Sept. 11 in an upset to Mount Si,
24-21. The Eagles matched the Wildcats touchdown for
touchdown. But in the end, a 23-yard field goal in the third
quarter put the Wildcats ahead. Issaquah jumped on the board
first, but lost the lead to Mount Si for good in the fourth
quarter. Despite returning a strong core of starters this
year, the Eagles’ season is off to a tough start. But
despite the loss, there were bright signs. Issaquah’s new
quarterback Ryan Bergman continued to improve on the field.
The senior led the offense to 218 passing yards with three
touchdown passes.
However, the Eagles’ rushing game was almost nonexistent,
managing only 32 yards for a combined 250 offensive yards.
Star running back Grant Gellatly’s absence due to a
hamstring injury was felt in the Eagles’ running game.
“Grant Gellatly’s worth two or three touchdowns a game,”
Wildcats head coach Charlie Kinnune said. Bergman has
improved since stepping into the starting quarterback
position this year. In the first quarter, he found wide
receiver Evan Peterson, a junior, on a 44-yard touchdown
pass. Then, in the fourth quarter, Bergman unleashed a
65-yard pass to Peterson in the end zone.
The Wildcats’ defense had difficulty containing Peterson,
but without a real running game, the Eagles couldn’t exploit
the receiver’s speed.
“Speed doesn’t deal with us in a nice way,” Kinnune said.

It was a rough night last
night for the Mount Si football team as they
traveled to Eastlake to open the season. One quarter
was all it took for the Wolves to take care of
scarlet and gray and start things out the right way.
Eastlake senior quarterback Kelby McCorkle scored a
pair of touchdowns and threw for another to lead the
Wolves to a 37-7 blowout of Mount Si in a KingCO
3A/4A crossover non-league game at Eastlake Stadium
in Sammamish. Matt Bankston scored the lone Wildcat
touchdown in defeat, as the Wolves used three
second-quarter scores to take control after Mount
Si’s defensive line shut down the Eastlake offense
throughout the entire first frame of play.
“We came out really well, kind of rubbed the green
off and were able to get a turnover and punch it in
and score, then they kind of started getting the
ball out on the perimeter, and we knew since the
last game last fall we were going to have issues
with space, breaking down and making plays in space
and that was an issue with us,” said Mount Si coach

The Mount Si Wildcats

their home schedule against another team
that will call the Wildcats' lair their home
this fall, the Issaquah Eagles.\
The Wildcats come into this one off a loss
to Eastlake last week which really, at the
end of the day, was about two things: one,
one quarter (the second, where the Wolves
scored 28 straight points en route to a 37-7
win), and two, the offense struggling to
respond, largely because the quarterbacks to
some degree struggled. It should be noted
once again, as we mentioned in a post-game
commentary last weekend, that the Wildcat
defense hung tough with Eastlake the entire
first quarter, then only gave up nine points
the entire second half.

Wildcats are
thrown challenge in week one — Wolves
September 2, 2009 - By Ryan
Piersol and Chris Huber - SnoValleyStar.com
Weapons return for 4A powerhouse Eastlake
Wolves
Once again, the football schedule
appears to be top-heavy for Mount Si. And, once
again, it starts with KingCo 4A power Eastlake.
The Wolves, who are ranked No. 14 by prep sports
Web site www.maxpreps.com., are coming off a
season in which they finished 6-4 and fell to
Olympia in a playoff qualifier. Among their wins
was a 24-12 victory in the season-opener against
Mount Si. When Eastlake hosts the Wildcats Sept.
4 in this year’s opener, it will do so with an
offensive line that is almost entirely new to
the starting lineup. Four of the five starters
up front are new, which caused head coach Gene
Dales to spend plenty of time with them during
the spring. "It'll be a matter of getting the
offensive front up to speed early and to stay
healthy,” Dales said. Quarterback Kelby McCorkle
earned the respect of his coaches in 2008 after
filling in for an injured Drake Furcini.
McCorkle came off the bench for Furcini in the
win against Mount Si and threw for 102 yards and
three touchdowns.

Wildcat
football team loaded for another playoff run

It’s time
for the mettle of the Mount Si football
program to be tested.
A year
after a successful season that included a
6-5 record, a third-place finish in the
league and a trip to the state playoffs, the
Wildcats find themselves replacing a bevy of
graduated seniors. Still, the coaching staff
believes the program is up to the task.
Mount Si
starts the season Sept. 4 at Eastlake with
expectations every bit as high as normal.
“We
graduated a large group of very good
football players, but we believe we have our
program to a point where we can bring kids
up and start with a good nucleus,” head
coach Charlie Kinnune said. “I look around
the team and I see a lot of athleticism. I
don’t see a lot of kids out of shape who are
going to suffer. And that’s huge.” Read

Kinnune Visits Jordan with Coach Korma
Both
went on vacation to Coach Korma's Homeland
And
had a great time.
From
Coach Korma:
Basically Jordan is a
huge archeological dig site. Only 15% of all the sites
have been dug up. Petra for example is only 15% is
visible, so is Jerash, etc. The coolest site is a stone
age village 6500bc that was where the first evidence of
a free standing dwelling, instead of living in caves,
and the people there were farmers. We went to the Jordan
river and to the baptism site, cultural, he is enjoying
the food very much also as you might imagine.

A Letter to all Incoming
Freshman
for the Class of 2013
From Head
Coach Kinnune
DOWNLOAD A COPY WITH IMPORTANT DATES HERE
Dear Wildcats,
Welcome to Wildcat Football. We look forward to your participation in our
program. Our Coaching staff has much anticipation about your class of athletes.
This letter is going out to 70 prospective Freshman Football Players. Please
read over the information. Enclosed is information that will help you organize
your summer plans.
We have created a culture within our team that values hard work,
enthusiasm, loyalty and making good decisions. Participation in our off season
conditioning is a big part of what we believe makes us successful. We have
played in the state tournament 2 of the past 3 seasons and expect to continue
that success. Many of your classmates have already committed to the weight room.
They are meeting the coaches and getting a head start. That is a “good decision”
on their part. Our Spring Camp for Freshman is June 8th through 11th - 2:45 to
4:30 at Mount Si High School. We will have a bus available, after school, at
Twin Falls and Chief Kanim for transportation. Our SMS player’s can walk over.
This camp is “free” of charge. We will have a summer camp for Freshman that will
be $100.00 July 13th through 16th (M-Th) 6:00 – 8:30pm. This will be full
contact. All participants in the camp will get their gear early for the season.
If you have questions please do not hesitate to call or contact me. Our
Website is also very comprehensive and should answer many of your questions. We look forward to seeing you. GO WILDCATS!
Sincerely,
Coach Kinnune
