James Michael McKiernan's legacy lives on in other
ways. Mount Si High School has started a memorial
football scholarship in his name, meant to help
deserving players with the cost of competition.
In an additional tribute, Mount Si head football
coach Charlie Kinnune announced the James McKiernan
Best Teammate award, which will go annually to the
player who best characterizes 'Jimmy Mac.' The first
recipient is senior and 2011 co-captain Sherman

Wildcat defense
shines, but offense struggles in season-ending
playoff loss to O’Dea, 11-11-11 Posted by Rhett Workman on
November 12, 2011 - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si went into last night’s 3A state football
round of 16 playoff game against a tough O’Dea squad
looking to pull off their second straight upset
against a top 10-ranked team, and their defense did
their best to help make that happen. But the offense
could not capitalize on that strong defensive
performance, and Mount Si’s season came to an end.
The Wildcats fell 17-3 to the Irish at Memorial
Stadium, with the only Mount Si points being a
37-yard field goal from junior Cameron Vanwinkle in
the fourth quarter. But it was the defense which was
the story, whether it was the line for the most part
shutting down the top two runners from O’Dea
(neither Jomari Brooks nor Tatum Taylor scored TD’s
in the contest; they had been the big touchdown
producers in the Irish’s opening-round win over
Mount Vernon) or the key interceptions from junior
Hunter Malberg which allowed Mount Si’s offense
extra chances to score.

Mount Si falls to
O’Dea in state football tournament
November 11, 2011 By Dan Catchpole -

Two times. O’Dea High School’s fearsome running
backs broke loose of Mount Si’s defensive line two
times. But that was all they needed to end the
Wildcats season in a 17-3 loss in the first round of
the 3A football state tournament on an icy night at
Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
The teams went into halftime separated by a single
field goal by the Fighting Irish. O’Dea’s first
touchdown came in the third quarter on a 70-yard
run. Mount Si managed a field goal to make it 10-3.

Final thoughts on
Friday night football Posted by Mason Kelley -
Seattle Times
I was at O'Dea's 17-3 win over Mount Si at Memorial
Stadium. Todd might have had more yards by himself
that both of those teams combined. It was a
defensive battle. It was a lot of fun watching the
Irish and the Wildcats go back-and-forth along the
lines. It wasn't great for offense, but the
competition in the trenches was great. O'Dea has the
right combination of size and speed to make a run in
the playoffs. The Irish have certainly proven
capable of winning close games, which is important
the deeper teams get in the postseason.

With the other O'Dea linebackers gathered around him
before Friday night's Class 3A first-round playoff
game, Jomari Brooks started shouting. The senior was
so loud he could be heard outside Memorial Stadium.
He knew what was at stake. "I told them this is
smash-mouth football," Brooks said. "This is what
O'Dea is about. We've just got to play hard and play
our hearts out, leave it all out on the field." He
knew the Irish couldn't take Mount Si lightly. They
didn't.
In a game that showcased two very good defenses, the
Irish produced just enough big plays to move on,
knocking off the 10th-ranked Wildcats, 17-3. "It was
a game like we expected," O'Dea coach Monte Kohler
said. "They (Mount Si) play hard. They've got a good
football team. They don't make mistakes." The Irish
advance to the quarterfinals against the winner of
Saturday's game between Capital and Hazen.
Friday night, the game's first seven possessions
produced six punts and a fumble. O'Dea (11-0) struck
first when Bart Hardwick hit a 32-yard field goal
with 54 seconds left in the first half. It was set
up by a 30-yard, play-action pass from quarterback
Pierre LeDorze to tight end Spencer Ramquist on
fourth-and-three.
It was 3-0 at halftime. Mount Si (7-4) didn't go
quietly against the state's third-ranked team.

state 3A football playoff matchup between them and
the SeaKing’s #1 seed, and Metro League champion,
O’Dea Fighting Irish. Here is your first look at

O’Dea is ranked #3 in the Seattle Times 3A poll, and
is one of several teams currently undefeated at
10-0. The Irish are coached by a man widely
considered to be among the most successful high
school football coaches in the state, Monte Kohler.
According to the school’s website, in his over
quarter-century at the school (Kohler first came on
board as head coach there in 1985), Kohler has led
his Irish teams to 22 Metro League crowns and 17
straight appearances at state, three of which ended
with state championships. And his team is loaded to

Everyone at Roy Anderson Field knew who the
seventh-ranked Peninsula Seahawks would turn to
Saturday night when they faced a fourth-and-1 at the
Mount Si 30-yard line. Trouble is, the Wildcats knew
it, too. Peninsula senior Danny Welstad rushed 22
times for 170 yards and a touchdown Saturday night,
but the Seahawks were stopped on fourth down on
their final possession and were eliminated from
postseason play by the Mount Si Wildcats, 17-14.
Peninsula, which trailed by three with less than a
minute to go, called senior Danny Welstad’s number
on an isolation play up the middle. But Mount Si
senior Josh Mitchell broke through the line and
hauled Welstad to his back to preserve the Wildcats’
17-14 win over Peninsula in a Class 3A state

about the venue
(click here for the history of the stadium), but
here's what I can tell you. It's a big stadium and
both sets of stands are covered. The players who
have played there can tell you it gets loud. So
every fan that we have present can help make a HUGE
difference in the game. It gets very cold down on
the field.
Please keep checking back in here for updates
throughout the week regarding fan buses, team

We told you earlier this week about Peninsula’s star
RB, Danny Welstad, and his penchant for TD’s, as
he’s scored 10 of them in the last two weeks. But
Mount Si has its own strong running attack, and
senior Connor Deutsch will be looking to perform the
same feat a predecessor of his did the last time
these two teams met in the playoffs back in 2008.
If you remember from back then, or have seen the
Mount Si football website this week, you know that
in that game, a 33-9 Mount Si win, then-Wildcat RB
Sean Snead literally took the game over and made it
his personal coming-out party, scoring a
school-record 5 TD’s. Deutsch will probably need to
have that kind of night for the Wildcats to have a
chance against a Seahawk team that is 8-1, ranked #7
in the state and whose only loss is to a Lakes team
that rivals Bellevue for being best in the state at
the 3A level.

Here is a
quick first look at Mount Si’s opening-round playoff opponent Saturday, the
Peninsula Seahawks. By: Rhett Workman - 11.01.11 Snoqualmie Valley
Sports Journal
The Seahawks are ranked #7 in this week’s Seattle Times 3A poll, and unlike
2008, the last time Mount Si and the Seahawks met, this Peninsula team looks
quite formidable. They have an 8-1 record, with their only loss being to
Lakes, who next to Bellevue may be the best in the state at the 3A level.
Peninsula earned home field for this matchup with their second-place finish
in the South Puget Sound League.
The main weapon on offense for the Seahawks is their senior running back,
Danny Welstad. Welstad scored four TD’s last week in Peninsula’s 48-6 win
over Enumclaw to close out the regular season, and he has 10 touchdowns in
the last two weeks. Welstad has the ability to score against good and bad
teams; case in point, he had four TD’s in a win earlier this season against
Eastside Catholic, who like Mount Si is in the playoffs this week with a 6-3
record. So Mount Si’s defense will have to pay a lot of attention to this
guy, that’s for sure.

Wildcats can't slow down the Bellevue Attack
It was not to be for the Wildcats
tonight losing to Bellevue 35-3 and more will be

ranked in the top 25 high school football teams in

top 10. To be ranked in the NATIONAL TOP 10 is truly
amazing since there are over 16,500 high schools in

the score reflects. It was a great game to watch.

Mount Si’s football program
celebrated the accomplishments over four years of
their senior class last night, and did so in front
of a large crowd, including many recent grads who
came back for Homecoming. But the opponent,
Bellevue, was expected to be a tall order, and the
Wolverines, after a slow start, proved that to be
the case. Still, though, the end result on the field
did not take away from what was a special
celebration for 15 seniors, a celebration which
ended with the official clinching of their fourth
straight playoff berth.
QB Tyler Hasty threw three touchdown passes, two to
Joey Moore, as Bellevue scored 35 unanswered points
over the final three quarters to defeat the Wildcats
35-3, knocking Mount Si into third place in league,
which earns the final playoff berth. The Wildcats
officially locked up that berth with Liberty’s loss,
also last night, to Interlake.

Both teams come in off blowout losses last week,
Mount Si last Thursday to Mercer Island and Juanita
last Friday to Bellevue. Which sets up a homecoming
week showdown with the postseason very much on the
line. Granted, the game between Mercer Island and
Liberty tonight also will have a huge say to this,
but the bottom line for the Wildcats is simple. Win
and you pretty much are in good shape to go, lose
and you likely after all is said and done will
probably not go. Why? If Mount Si loses to the
Rebels tonight and then the rest of the schedule
goes as expected, both teams will end up with three
league losses, and that will be likely the border
line for the third and final playoff spot. Juanita
would take that by way of the head-to-head victory,
leaving Mount Si out in the cold. There’s a lot of
variables in this, we know, but the simple reality
for the Wildcats is the famous line of the late Al
Davis: “Just win baby!”

Two fumbles by Mount Si highlighted the team’s
frustrating Thursday night against Mercer Island.
The Islanders recovered two key fumbles in the first
half that could have shifted the momentum. Instead,
they routed the Wildcats 42-14 in the 3A/2A KingCo
Conference contest at Mercer Island High School.
The first fumble ended a strong Mount Si drive that
put them only a few yards away from scoring, and
tying the game 7-7 in the first quarter. Wildcats
running back Connor Deutsch looked to have found a
hole through the Islanders’ defensive line when
linebacker Sam Porter stripped the ball from him on
Mercer Island’s 9 yard line. The Islanders recovered
and held onto their slim lead.

Snoqualmie Valley Sport Journal
Week six of the high school football season gets an
early start tonight, with a huge KingCo 3A game for
Mount Si’s football team. As you have seen over the
past five weeks, we’ve had both the Wildcats and
Cedarcrest previews and picks for their games in one
write-up. This week, though, is a bit different, so
let’s get to it. Mount Si against UW-bound Jeff
Lindquist and the Mercer Island Islanders.

Tonight’s game has generated a ton of media
interest. According to Mount Si’s football website,
a couple of local TV stations and the Seattle Times
are expected to be there covering the contest, and
no wonder. This game is a battle between two clubs,
both with Pac-12 recruits, fighting for postseason
spots. Mount Si is 3-0 league, 4-1 overall after
last week’s win over Interlake, while Mercer Island
is 2-1 league, 3-2 overall after their loss last
week to Bellevue.

Mount Si takes to the
air in win at Interlake September 30, 2011 - By Dan
Catchpole - SnoValleyStar.com
Mount Si started strong, wavered and refocused to
win 26-14 at Interlake. The Wildcats dominated the
first half, taking a 17-0 lead into halftime. The
offense faltered in the second half, but still
managed to tack on another 9 points. Despite the
school’s reputation for smash-mouth football, the
team wasn’t afraid of putting the ball in the air.

scores win against Saints, 9-30 Posted by Rhett Workman on
October 1, 2011 SVSJ
Mount Si’s football team continued its hot start to
2011 last night, grabbing its fourth straight win
with a 26-14 victory over the Interlake Saints at
Interlake High School in Bellevue. Wildcat QB Ryan
Atkinson threw two TD passes to lead Mount Si, whose
victory kept them in a first-place tie within KingCo
3A with the Bellevue Wolverines, both of whom are
undefeated in league at 3-0. The victory was also
Mount Si’s fourth straight, putting their overall
mark at 4-1 on the season.

The Wildcats come in off a historic
victory for their coach, Charlie Kinnune, in last
week’s win over Liberty, but boy, was that not easy.
Mount Si had to rally from a 13-0 halftime hole and
only tied the game with seconds left in regulation
before Cameron Vanwinkle kicked what turned out to
be the game-winning field goal in overtime for the
16-13 stunner over the Patriots.

Athletes of the Week
for 9-28 Posted by Rhett Workman on
September 28, 2011SVSJ
Time now for the Athlete of the Week
for this week, and we roll back over to the girls,
but before we do, we want to take the time to
recognize a tremendous achievement for a local high
school coach.
As we noted in our game story from
last Friday night’s football game, Mount Si’s
longtime football coach, Charlie Kinnune, recorded
his 100th win as Wildcat coach, and it came in
dramatic fashion, as the Wildcats rallied from a
13-0 hole to beat rival Liberty in overtime 16-13.
The win pushed Mount Si’s record to 3-1, keeping
them #10 in this week’s Seattle Times high school 3A
football poll.

Mount Si football
overcomes woeful first half to stun Liberty in
overtime and give coach historic win Posted by Rhett Workman on
September 24, 2011 SVSJ
The Mount Si Wildcat football team went into
halftime against Liberty last night feeling very
bleak. They were down 13-0, with a number of
mistakes costing them in that first half. But the
second half was a much different story, and the
Wildcats found a way to get it done in dramatic
fashion and give their coach a historic achievement.
Cameron Vanwinkle kicked both the game-tying field
goal with less than a minute left in regulation, and
what turned out to be the winner in overtime, as
Mount Si rallied from their halftime hole to score a
huge 16-13 overtime victory over a Liberty Patriots
team that had ended the Wildcats’ season last year
in the playoffs. The win was longtime Wildcat head
coach Charlie Kinnune’s 100th in his storied Mount
Si career.

SNOQUALMIE — Cameron Vanwinkle kicked a tying
43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and the
winning 36-yarder in overtime as 10th-ranked Mount
Si rallied for a 16-13 victory over visiting Liberty
Friday night. The Wildcats (3-1, 2-0 KingCo 3A/2A)
trailed 13-0 at halftime before the first of
Vanwinkle's three field goals, in the third quarter.
They still trailed 13-3 going into the fourth, but
Ryan Atkinson found Tyler Button with a 7-yard
touchdown.

Mount Si forgets
shaky start to beat Liberty in OT September 24, 2011 By Sebastian Moraga -

The Mount Si Wildcats endured three
first-half turnovers to defeat the Patriots 16-13 in
overtime. The win was the Wildcats’ third of the
season and head coach Charlie Kinnune’s 100th in his
career. “The kids gutted it out,” Kinnune said of
his team. A field goal with 33 seconds left in the
game tied the game at 13, bringing the Wildcats back
from a 13-0 halftime deficit. Then, in overtime,
Wildcat kicker Cameron Vanwinkle nailed a 35-yard
field.

Week 4 of Valley high school football Posted by Rhett Workman on September
23, 2011 SVSJ
The Wildcats and Patriots meet for the
first time since last season’s state playoff game, which
saw Liberty escape with a 17-14 win ending Mount Si’s
season. The man who made the game-deciding pick,
Chandler Jenkins, and his fellow stars Trey Wheeler and
Jake Bainton, all have moved on now, having graduated
last spring, so that leaves the Patriots looking to find
some new stars. And they have a couple. QB Jordan West
threw two TD passes in last week’s Liberty blowout of
Sammamish and RB Hamilton Noel scored three TD’s in that
54-7 pasting of the Totems, which was Liberty’s first
win of the season after falling in their two nonleague
games against neighborhood rivals Issaquah and Skyline.
These two will be worth watching tonight.

In 3A, Ferndale dropped its second
straight game to a good team, falling against
Arlington, 44-27. The Golden Eagles were the only
team to lose this week and fall out of the rankings,
replaced by Mount Si, which seems to be back on
track after a season-opening loss to Woodinville.
The Wildcats, who are No. 10 this week, get another
test this week in Liberty, which is 1-2, but those
losses came against ranked 4A teams.

The Mount Si Wildcats dominated the Lake Washington
Kangaroos 42-0 Sept. 16 in a game where the visiting
Kangs did not make it past the 50-yard line. Mount Si
(1-0 in league, 2-1 overall) overwhelmed a team that
arrived in Snoqualmie undefeated after wins over
Garfield and Redmond. “We’re continuing to get better
right now,” Mount Si head coach Charlie Kinnune said,
later adding, “We’re concentrating in all parts of the
game, the little things that you have to deal with,
especially with a young team, and we’re young.”

Van Winkle stays

September 19, 2011 SVSJ
We have a little more for you from
Mount Si kicker Cameron Van Winkle as we promised
for you last week during our game preview from last
Friday’s game against Lake Washington. It has been a
tremendous last two weeks for Van Winkle, with
arguably the two greatest kicking performances by a
Wildcat kicker in school history. First was the four
field goals against Bothell which helped him break
the career field goal mark and single game field
goal mark, and tie the one for longest kick and put
him on pace to break the season field goal record.
Then last week, he broke the longest kick record
with a 49-yarder and that field goal, the last of
three against Lake Washington, also helped him break
the season mark.

A historic night for

Mount Si’s kicker, Cameron Van Winkle,
has been the big story around the program this past
week, after his record-setting performance last Saturday
in the Wildcats’ football team’s win over Bothell. Last
night, Van Winkle continued to make history, and that,
combined with a little history for three of Mount Si’s
budding young offensive stars, helped the Wildcats get
their second straight win.

Kangaroos, tonight, Mount Si HS, Snoqualmie, 7:00
kickoff. The Wildcats come in at a bit surprising 1-1
after a stunning upset over perennial 4A power Bothell
last Saturday night that was largely courtesy of the
foot of junior Cameron Van Winkle, who as we told you
earlier this week had in our view the greatest
performance by a kicker in Mount Si school history in
last week’s game, breaking two school records, tying a
third and putting him on pace for a fourth out of his
efforts. We interviewed him last night and will have
that for you sometime this weekend so look for it here

Mount Si defeats
Bothell on record-setting night September 11, 2011 - By Sebastian
Moraga - SnoValleyStar.com
The Mount Si Wildcats turned in a
promising performance Sept. 10, defeating 4A school
Bothell 26-14 on the road. The Wildcats (1-1)
avenged a home loss to Bothell last year and erased
much of the sour taste from last week’s home loss to
Woodinville. “It was a total team effort,” head
coach Charlie Kinnune said. Bothell struck first,
with a 13-yard strike from quarterback Austen Dahl
to wide receiver Trent Sewell in the end zone. Mount
Si punted on its next drive and left Bothell
starting at the 50 yard line.

COACH JOHN ZANAS SPEAKS AT 2011 NFL COMBINE
Recently, Mt Si coach John
Zanas was a guest speaker at the NFL Combine in
Indianapolis, Indiana. He was invited by the NFL Players
Association to speak on the rehab of overuse and post
surgical issues in athletes. John addressed a group of
current players, team physicians, sports agents and some
prospective NFL players. While in attendance, he also
had the opportunity to work with 10 current NFL players
coming off surgery. Additionally, John got to watch some
of the invited athletes work out in preparation for
their combine testing.
Congratulations to John on
all his accomplishments and his recognition by the NFL
PA as a leader in the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation
fields. The Mount Si Wildcat Football Program is honored
and proud to have John's expertise on staff. As a
licensed Physical Therapist, a Certified Strength &
Conditioning Specialist and a Certified Performance
Enhancement Specialist, Mount Si's athletes are in the
capable hands of a leader in both the training and rehab
fields.
Despite the allure of
speaking at the NFL combine, John has assured us that he
loves coaching and working with young student athletes.
That is great news for the Wildcat Program!
Congratulations John!
