WILDCAT FRESHMAN LOSE
FINAL GAME
OF 2011 SEASON TO
BELLEVUE 41-0
By: Mike Smith 10.28.2011
Game 8 Highlights:
A
great season for the boys at Mount Si. We saw some
tough games and some incredible wins. This week was
on the tougher side against a very strong Bellevue
team. We threw everything we could at them
including our full mix of plays and players. We
just couldn't seem to match up against a few of
Bellevue's very long plays for touchdowns or their
10-yard by 10-yard drives down the field. The first
quarter was a bit of a struggle with two punts by
Mount Si which were answered by touchdowns by
Bellevue…one after driving the ball slowly for 65
yards down the field and one after a 65 yard TD pass
at the end of the quarter.
Though Bellevue was able to score again in the
second quarter the Wildcats had a few highlights
including a nice long drive from our own 28 to
Bellevue's 38 before turning it over on downs, a
nice tackle by Dallas Clark in the backfield and a
great 12 yard catch by Beau Daniel before the half.
The second half was filled with a little more
excitement from our boys. We had nice runs by
Curtis Handy, Tyler Smith, Richard Willard and Joey
Ware…nice pass and run plays from each of our
quarterbacks, Jojo Hillel and Colin Brown…long
receptions and runs from Sean Hyland, Beau Daniel
and Hayden Malberg…and both our offensive and
defensive lines played strong. We couldn't produce
a score but had some nice drives into Bellevue
territory showing a threat.
By
the end of the game we ended up with a loss but no
doubt played some great football…and against a very
strong team with great sportsmanship. We couldn't
be more proud of how hard our boys have worked this
year and can't wait for next season! As always,
thanks to the fans who made it out to cheer on the
Wildcats. Keep it up for our other Wildcat sports
and of course the football seasons to come.
Here are the scores
at the end of each quarter:
End of Q1: Mount Si 0 - Bellevue
14
End of Q2: Mount Si 0 - Bellevue
21
End of Q3: Mount Si 0 - Bellevue

FRESHMAN POST ANOTHER
WIN! Defeat Kennedy 20-14
Another solid win by the Wildcats this week with
scores across three quarters and solid defense for
the entire first half and at game end. The light
rain and mist made for an interesting first half
with several fumbles causing turnovers by both
teams…the first pair that landing in our favor
allowing Curtis Handy to drive in for a 4 yard TD
for the initial score. The remainder of the first
quarter was a back and forth event with no scores.
But in the second quarter Mount Si's punt was
dropped by the Kennedy returner and recovered on the
Kennedy 14 by Hayden Malberg. This was followed by a
14 yard run by Curtis Handy with great blocking to
clear the way. The Wildcats once again pulled off
their classic fake extra point by Malberg to bring
the score to 14-0.
In the third quarter Kennedy was able to put 6
points on the board but only after an unfortunate
disconnect on the punt snap allowing them to run it
in. And in the fourth quarter Kennedy was able to
tie it up at 14 a piece with a solid drive.
But the Wildcats just turned on the heat with a kick
off return to mid field which was soon followed by
another solid execution of the hook and ladder which
brought Handy across the goal line for a 20-14 lead.
Kennedy couldn't recover this time as our defense
was strong and our offense ran down the clock.
There were many highlights this week with fumble
recoveries, interceptions, great blocks and first
down saving defensive batted balls and tackles. The
boys have definitely come into their own and are
ready for the last game against Bellevue. Nice win
Wildcats!
Once again thanks to all fans who made it out in the
cool rain to support the boys!
Here are the scores at the end of each quarter:
End of Q1: Mount Si 6 -
Kennedy 0
End of Q2: Mount Si 14 - Kennedy 0

FRESHMAN
Lose to Mercer Island 34-20
Game 6 Highlights:
Coming off of two very strong wins
the boys hit the field with confidence and high
expectations. They had a strong first half including
a first drive 12 yard run by Tyler Smith for a first
down, a defensive fumble recovery by Zach Brooks, a
19 yard run by Curtis Handy and then a 14 yard TD
pass from Jojo Hillel to Hayden Malberg putting the
Wildcats up 7-0 half way through the first quarter.
On the following kick-off Tye Wright made a great
tackle for a zero gain start for Mercer on their own
20 yard line. Mercer drove hard down the field but
was finally stopped when Max Adamson picked of a 25
yard pass attempt on the Wildcats 9 yard line. This
was followed by a log drive by our boys which ended
with a 31 yard TD pass on a fake sweep right from
Handy to Sean Hyland to put us up 14-0 at the end of
the first quarter.
The Wildcats continued to power through on defense
including another two interceptions, this time by
Malberg, and a great sack for a loss of 10 yards by
Mathew Mounsey. They ended the final Wildcats drive
of the half with a 50 yard pass play by Jojo Hillel
to Hyland for a TD putting the boys up 20-8 by half
time. At this point it looked like there was no
stopping the Wildcats for their third win.
The second half took a very different turn. The
Wildcats couldn't seem to build a strong drive as
Mercer increased their push into the backfield and
had tight coverage on pass plays. The Mercer offense
turned up the heat as well driving in for 4
unanswered touchdowns. The boys never gave up and
played hard but in the end couldn't put any more
points on the board.
Excellent job coming out strong but the second half
was definitely full of lessons to be learned. As
always the boys will practice and play hard for the
next game and hopefully come up with another win.
Scores at the end of each quarter:
End of Q1: Mount Si 14 - Mercer 8
End of Q2: Mount Si 20 - Mercer 8
End of Q3: Mount Si 20 - Mercer 22

WINNING STREAK!!!
TAKE DOWN SAMMAMISH
32-21
Game 5 Highlights:
Nice job
boys! Excellent night in Sammamish with a 32-21
win!!! The game started a bit slow with the first
drive when the boys couldn't convert to a first down
and had to punt the ball away. Sammamish was able to
drive in for a TD but missed the extra point. But in
Mount Si's second drive of the quarter after a great
kickoff return by Curtis Handy and long runs from
both Curtis and Tyler Smith the boys pulled out a
play that no one on the field could ever have
expected. Colin Brown threw a great 8 yard pass to
Hayden Malberg who quickly, before getting tackled
by a defender, pitched the ball to Max Adamson in
classic "hook and ladder" fashion who ran the ball
28 more yards in for the TD. Great play call
coaches! Great execution by the Wildcats!
The defense
held Sammamish through the next drive keeping us in
the lead. This also allowed our offense to pull out
some more magic. A 54 yard TD pass from Colin Brown
to Sean Hyland which left Sammamish scratching their
heads. Then, after another set of long runs from
Smith and Handy and a great reception by Beau
Daniel, the boys once again executed a great play
call. A fake halfback sweep right by Handy who threw
a long pass to a wide open Sean Hyland. Touchdown!
Both the
offense and the defense continued to play a strong
game with many highlights:
-
Great
open field tackle by Dallas Clark on a kickoff
on the Sammamish 9 yard line
-
Sacks and
back field tackles by Mathew Mounsey, Dallas
Clark and others on the line
-
More TDs
by Adamson and Handy
-
Two
interceptions by Handy
-
Strong
defensive stand to keep Sammamish behind for
more than 3/4 of the game
We should
also applaud the families from Mount Si who more
than tripled the attendance of the Sammamish home
team crowd in the pouring rain. Thanks to those who
provided the cover and all who stuck it out through
the bad weather!

scores at the end of each quarter:

The Freshman team won last night over Liberty 21 -
13.
Very
exciting game. Nice to see them get 3 touchdowns,
their first 3 of the year. This is the first 3A team
our team has played, the first 3 games were against
4A teams.
Game 4 Highlights:
Thanks Mike Smith and Kathy
Hyland
Overall the Mount Si boys looked like they took a
180 degree turn from their previous games. They
played as a team with strong tackling/blocking and
their plays ranged from basic hard hitting runs to
long down field passes. There was even a trick/fake
extra point thrown in to clean up their score on a
previously missed field goal. For those that
attended, it was the most exciting game of the year
and definitely the most highlights for our boys.
Aside from a handful of penalties the mistakes were
kept to a minimum. We had several fourth down
conversions on offense as well as stopping Liberty
hard on a few of their attempts to convert on fourth
down...including a 4th and 1 on Liberty's 30 (giving
us GREAT field position followed by a TD) and one
4th and 5 on Mount Si's 35 halting Liberty's drive
in to score.
There were many highlights...
• First TD of the
year by Tyler Smith - 17 yard run
• Sacks on the Liberty QB by Zach Brooks, Dallas
Clark and Mathew Mounsey
• Great tackle on a screen pass by Bryce
Abbott-Heutmaker that could have resulted in a very
long play
• Blocked extra point by Sean Hyland
• 4th and 1 on the 1 yard line TD by Tyler Smith -
GREAT BLOCKING LINE
• Incredible 50+ yard pass and catch by Colin Brown
to Sean Hyland for a TD
• Great fake extra point (great kick fake with a run
by Hayden Malberg) to bring us to 21 points
• Great block of a long pass by Brock Johnson to
help stop the 4th quarter drive by Liberty
• Excellent job shutting down Liberty's offense in
the entire second half!
Great job coming together as a team boys! What a
win!
Here are the scores at the end of each quarter:
End of Q1: Mount Si 7 - Liberty 7 End of Q2: Mount Si 7 - Liberty 13 End of Q3: Mount Si 13 - Liberty 13 End of Q4: Mount Si 21 - Liberty 13

ANOTHER TOUGH LOSS FOR
WILDCATS FRESHMAN AWAY AT SKYLINE
By: Mike Smith 09.22.11
Skyline is a very good team...they made mistakes but
then made up for them with strong running and a very
strong defense (especially number 33 who is a power
house runner and a hole plugger on defense). Mount
Si seemed to be more like a roller coaster with a
small number of ups. They started with a nice
interception but then couldn't drive the ball on
offense. There were some good tackles here and there
but overall the basics is a place where they
struggled (blocking...tackling). The QB (Collin
Brown) was under pressure with every throw and
couldn't get many off clean and most runs up the
middle were stopped at or near the line. Even with a
first and goal on the 4 yard line they could not
convert and gave it up after 4 downs. Very
unfortunate.
There were a few highlights:
-
One fumble recovery
-
2 interceptions
-
Their first points (safety with a QB sack 3
yards into the end zone)
-
Some of the kick off returns had 10-20 yard
returns
-
One or two 20+ yard receptions
-
A couple of 8+ yard screens
All
in all they need work on the basics so they can give
the QB time and allow the run to be a threat.
Here are the scores at the end of each quarter:
End of Q1: 0-14
End of Q2: 0-28
End of Q3: 2-35
End of Q4: 2-41

Hello Frosh Football Fans!
From Head Coach Dirk Hansen
The
freshman squad traveled to Woodinville last Tuesday
for their first game of the season. Offensively the
Cats had a hard time getting into a groove,
committing an assortment of penalty’s, fumbles, and
a lack of “push” up front at the point of attack.
Defensively, the cats showed some signs of life but
it wasn’t enough as the cats would go on to lose
37-0. The cats look to be more opportunistic vs.
Bothell, their next opponent, and the first home
game of season.
Wildcat Pride!

Dramatic First Game
Loss for our Freshman Team
Lose to Woodinville
37-0
Game Recap that follows by Mike Smith:
The
boys played a very tough Woodinville team that had
the advantages of a stronger drive on offense and
less mistakes and penalties all around than our
boys. We started strong in the first quarter with
equal matched offenses and defenses to end the
quarter with a 0-0 tie. At the start of Q2
Woodinville had a strong drive including a 32 yard
run down to the 2 yard line with about 8 minutes
left in the half. They scored on the next play to go
up 7-0. Both teams played strong defense for the
remainder of the half (no first downs) to go into
half time 7-0.
Woodinville opened up the second half with scores on
their next three possessions while our boys could
not seem to drive the ball deep enough to be a
threat. We had many very good plays for 4 to 6 yards
but could not string enough together without
fumbles, sacks or penalties to create a score.
Woodinville completed the scoring with a 30 yard
field goal to win 37-0.
There were many bright spots throughout the game
with completed passes and strong drives which the
boys should be very proud of. There are also things
to work on with penalties and protection. The very
last play of the game was a punt from Woodinville
where it looked like the long kick touched a
Woodinville player. We ran it in for a touchdown but
the ball was called dead as the player did not
actually touch it. Exciting finish for what looked
like a score but unfortunately left us scoreless.
Scoring:
End of Q1: 0-0
End of Q2: 7-0
End of Q3: 27-0 (3 TDs with 1 missed extra point)
End of Q4: 37-0 (TD & Field Goal)

Typical Freshman
Football Week:
Monday:
Freshman Practice 2:30. (JV Game night)
Tuesdays:
Freshman Practice 2:30, then Study nights - all
players encouraged to stay after practice and study
together, dinner will be provided. Tutors will be
available for anyone who needs one. Open until 7pm.
Wednesday:
Freshman Game Days
From
Coach Hansen: On away games, depending on when the
bus leaves, normally around 4:00 or 4:30 pm, the
football players need to be ready and suited 30
minutes prior… Home games (6:00 pm kick-off) the
kids need to be suited and ready to roll 1-hour
prior to game time. Most of the times the kids just
hang out after school…. Do homework is my
recommendation." ~Coach Hansen There is return bus
service after the game. "If a parent wants to take
their son home with them after an away game we just
need visual and verbal confirmation from the legal
guardian/parent. ( A note stating “It is ok for
Johnny to ride with Mr. & Mrs. Jones is ok as well)
Normally, all kids ride the bus back home… we prefer
this. It is good team building."
Thursdays:
Freshman Practice 2:30, then Team Dinner, (Sophomore
Game night) see note below from Candi Pike about how
team dinners work.
Friday: Early
Release, Freshman practice still starts at 2:30
after teachers are done for the day. Most players
stay at school after early release and study until
practice. The Commons Area is open and some days
coach may be able to get a class room for the boys.
My own son, Sean, will be doing this since I work
until 5pm each day. (Varsity Game night)
Team Dinners:
Dinners are Thursday nights in the Commons and
usually we start at 5pm depending on when the
coaches release the boys from the field. Everything
is ready to go for the boys and we serve in a buffet
style. We have a great system in place and the line
moves pretty fast. There is a “pecking order” that
has been established over the years and it is like a
“rite of passage” meaning that the boys line up in
class order with Coaches first, Seniors next,
Juniors, Sophomores and then the Freshmen. At the
first dinner each fall it is a lot of fun to see the
kids move up in the line with their class. They
really get a big kick out of it.
We always have plenty of food so once everyone goes
through the line then they can come back up for
seconds or thirds. As soon as everyone is seated and
eating then we roll out dessert. I have found that
the upper classmen who have been together throughout
the years will sit together and the freshmen will
sit together at the other tables. It changes as the
season progresses and the Freshmen get to know more
of the other players. During dinner Coach Kinnune
assigns a specific class for clean up. We are
responsible for leaving the Commons cleaner than we
found it.
They eat fast and by 5:30 we are wrapping up dinner
and the boys are getting ready to leave. Dinner will
be every Thursday night except on Oct 5th because
the Varsity plays on October 6th (Thursday that week
instead of Friday) It is a great bonding experience
and they always have a great time. We look forward
to it each week. The menu is posted in the locker
room or the weight room so they can see what we are
having each week.
We are looking forward to a great season with the
teams!
Candi Pike (Team Dinner Coordinator)
